Astia-askartelua // Crafting with Dishes

Kolmikerroksinen kakkuteline on koottu kahdesta jalallisesta lasista ja kolmesta erikokoisesta lautasesta. Väleissä on kaksikomponenttisuperpikaliimaa, joten rakennelma on kestävä ja vakaa. Kaikki astiat löydetty Turun Ekotorilta. Epäilen, että kassatäti pitää mua vähintäänkin outona, kun käyn siellä viikon välein, valitsen puoli tuntia ja poistun sitten mukanani kassillinen eriparisia astioita. Jos jotakin on myynnissä monta kappaletta, en vahingossakaan ota kuin yhden. Mahtavat siellä miettiä, millainen astiasto minulla oikein on.

Minulla ei ole ikinä ollut tällaista tarjoiluastiaa, enkä ole vielä koskaan törmännyt kaupan versioon, johon olisin ihastunut. Tämä sen sijaan on kaikessa eriparisuudessaan ja mauttomassa kultakoristuksessaan täydellinen. Seuraavaksi pitää leipoa telineeseen täytettä.

This triple-decker cake stand is made of two glasses and three plates in different sizes. There's two component super glue in between every part, so the wholeness is strong and solid. All the dishes are bought from the local recycling center. I have doubts the cashier of the place has to thik I'm weird, as I go there once a week and buy a pile of mismatching dishes. She must be wondering what kind of set I have at home.

I have never had a stand like this before, and have never met a ready-made one I would have loved. But this one, with it's mismatching parts and cheesy golden decorations is perfect for me. Next I just need to bake something to put on it.

Hullun koruntekijän teekutsut // Mad Jewelrymaker's Tea Party

Minä pidän kahvikupeista. Ja jos jokin omistani menee rikki, eikä ole ihan tuhannen päreinä, en yleensä raaski heittää paloja pois. Olen pitkään hautonut tuossa työpöydällä viime syksynä haljennutta kuppia ja miettinyt, mitä siitä tekisin. No, en tiedä vieläkään, mutta tänään sitten hajosi ohuempi ja kevyempi kuppi, ja innostuin uudestaan. Riikka ehdotti, että kokeilisin tehdä koruja. No, tässä lopputulos.

Ensin rikoin kuppia vähän lisää, naputin vasaralla kankaaseen käärittyä jämää. Kun olin saanut melko kivoja paloja irti, hioin niitä hiekkapaperilla, etteivät reunat jäisi liian teräviksi. Aika kauan sai raaputtaa, että kulmat pehmenivät yhtään, mutta ainakaan sormet eivät ole enää vaarassa. Poraaminen ei ihan onnistunut, joten korvisten metallipiikit on vain pikaliimattu takapuolelle. Päätin tehdä vielä rintakorun, ja käteen osui tuo korvallinen pala. Siinä oli enemmän luonnetta kuin tavallisessa sirpaleessa, joten siihen minä sitten rakastuin. Ei ehkä maailman käytännöllisin pala koruksi, mutta onko sillä niin merkitystä, jos on nätti?

I love coffee cups and when one breaks, I usually don't wanna throw the pieces away.The one that broke today was kinda light and thin, so I decided to try to do something out of it. Riikka suggested I would do some jewelry, and so I tried. Well, here's the outcome.

First I broke the cup a bit more, wrapped it in a piece of cloth and hammered. When I had kinda nice pieces I sanded down the sharp edges. I had to do it for a while to make them smoother, but now I won't hurt my fingers anymore. It wasn't possible to drill the pieces, so I just clued the eye pins on the backside of the earring pieces. Then I decided to make a brooch, and randomly picked the piece with the handle. And cause it had more character, I fell in love with it. Well, I have no idea how wearable this will be as a brooch, but does it matter when it's so pretty?

Punapää ja kolme karhua // Redhead and Three Bears

Minulla on tapana innostua jostakin toimivasta ideasta ja tehdä samalla monta. Siitähän tämä koko Ikomi-hommakin blogeineen ja etsyineen lähti: ihminen nyt vaan ei tarvitse viittä paria dominopalikkakorvakoruja. Niinpä kun ruskeaa lankaa riitti, syntyi nallehattuja koko perheelle. Vaikkei ole edes karhuntai.

Vasemmassa reunassa on oma jättipiponi. Ymmärtänette varmaan, miksen tehnyt siitä päänmyötäistä. Kyllä, saatan olla outo, mutta ei minulla sentään kartion mallinen pää ole. Anyway, oikeanpuoleisesta tuli jo mallikkaampi. Siitä piti tulla lasten kokoa, mutta jossain kävi jotain ja lopputulos sopiikin minun päähähäni. Sen jälkeen lankaa olikin enää pieni kerä jäljellä, joten siitä syntyi pikkukarhun myssy. En suoraan sanottuna ole varma, onko edes vauvoilla noin pieni pää. Saatikka suostuuko yksikään vauva käyttämään seiskaveikasta neulottua pipoa parkumatta. Ehkä pääsen testaamaan joskus, jos lähipiiriin ilmestyy joku pieneläjä. Jos nyt yksikään äiti suostuu altistamaan lapsensa ihmiskokeelleni. Vai pitäisikö tätä kutsua karhukokeeksi?

When I get an idea that works I get excited and have to make multiple items before moving to the next one. That's why I originally started this whole Ikomi-thingie (blog, etsy etc.): one person just doesn't need five pairs of domino earrings. So when I had some extra yarn in brown I made bear hats for the whole bear family. Even though it's not evena bearday.

The one on the left is my huge beanie. You may now understand why I made it too big and didn't put the ears on the top. Yes, I may be strange, but my head still isn't a cone. The second one, on the right, fitted better already. I was trying to make a kid's hat, but something happened and in the end it fitted me perfectly. Afterwards there wasn't that much yarn left, so I made a teeny tiny hat for a little bear. Honestly speaking, I have no idea if even babies have such a tiny heads. Or if a baby would ever be able to wear a hat made out of woolen yarn without crying. Maybe some day if a baby will be born into my circle of acquaintances I may be able to find out the answers. If any mother will ever let me use their kid to such a human testing. Or should I say bear testing?

Toinen erä // Batch two

Tykkäsin kuppityynyn tekemisestä sen verran, että piti tehdä muutama lisää. Yritän kaupata niitä muille neulojaan hukkaaville, sillä itselle riittää yksi kupponen. Kupit löytyivät kaikki Turun Ekotorilta, tuolta hylättyjen tavaroiden hautausmaalta. Kahvikuppifanin sormet alkoivat syyhytä, ja oli kauheaa joutua jättämään niin monta hienoa sinne. Varsinkin, kun saa pilkkahintaan (20-50 senttiä kappale) Muut materiaalit ovat Emmauksen Aurinkotehtaalta: sekalaisia tilkkuja ja tyynyjen täytteiksi rumia, neulottuja pannunlappuja.

I liked making the pincushion cup so much I made a few more. Going to try to sell these to people who also lose their pins and needles, as one is enough for me. I bought all the cups from a local recycling center and the other materials (fabric scraps and some very ugly knitted kettleholders to use for filling the cushions) from a charity shop. The cups were so very cheap, only 20-50 cent per piece. It was hard to leave the rest of them there, as I love coffee cups.

Pientä kivaa // Nice 'n Tiny

Ja taas on karhuntai // Bearday, again

Kun tiistaina virkkasin auton takapenkillä karhunkorvia, alettiin ratin takana epäillä, että kissa kärsii identiteettikriisistä. Vastasin tekeväni valepukua karhuntaiksi. Ja tänään se sitten valmistuikin, toisessa autossa istuessa.

Pipo korvineen on virkattu Seitsemästä veljeksestä. Se on improvisoimalla syntynyt, joten virkkuumalleja on käytetty ainakin kolmea erilaista ja koukkuja kahta eri kokoa. Ei mikään maailman siistein työnjälki, mutta ehkä seuraavassa versiossa sitten. Ajattelin ensin tehdä päänmyötäisen ja laittaa korvat päälaelle, mutta vahingossa muodostunut hiippa muutti suunnitelmia. Nyt pipo pussittaa tuolta takaa silleen muodikkaasti ja korvat on ommeltu lähelle etureunaa, jotta pysyisivät oikeassa kohtaa. Koska en nää päätäni takaapäin (eikä sen kuvaaminenkaan oikein onnistunut), en tiedä näyttääkö se tyhmältä. Enkä oikeastaan välitä, sillä mukavuus on kerrankin huippuluokkaa.

Kissantaita odotellessa, siihenhän pipo jo löytyy.

On Tuesday I crocheted bear-ears on the back seat of a car, and the driver supposed this cat has some serious identity problems. I answered I'm just making a disguise for the bearday. And today I finally finished the hat, when traveling in another car.

I improvised while crocheting this, so it has at least three different stitches made with crochet hooks in two different sizes. May not be the neatest of my woks. First I was going to do a fitting one and put the ears on top, but in the end I didn't like the way it looked. So I made the hat a bigger beanie and put the ears lower on the forehead so they would stay on the right level. As I can't see how my head looks from the back (and even taking a picture of it myself was a bit too hard), I have no idea if it looks stupid, but frankly, I don't care. It's just feels so nice and comfy.

Waiting for the caturday, luckily I already have a hat for that.

When me and my sister were kids, we played with these dishes in our doll's house. Now, when no-one is playing with these anymore, I transformed the old toys to jewelry. These pieces have a memorable story.

Vihdoinkin // Finally

Tässä se nyt on. Nappikaulakoru, josta ohimennen edellisessä tekstissä mainitsin. Valmistui vuosi sitten ja on sittemmin valloittanut lempikorun paikan. Se on kaunis, värikäs ja sopivan huomiotaherättävä (kerää siis paljon positiivisia kommentteja). Koska siinä on kaikki värit, se sopii asuun kuin asuun ja sen voi vain kääntää niin, että oikeat värit ovat näkyvissä. Pelastaa harmaat päivät ja ikävät aamut.

Toteuttaminenkin oli ihan yksinkertaista, napit on kiinnitetty toisiinsa samalla tavalla väännellyillä korupiikeillä kuin mustassa ketjunappivirityksessä. Suurin osa napeista on kulkeutunt nappilaatikkoon Craftastic-nimisestä Etsy-kaupasta, mutta muitakin on mukana.

Here it is. The button necklace I mentioned in the previous post. I made this a year ago, and it's become my favourite necklace since. It's beautiful, colorful and attracts lots of positive attention. Cause there's so many colors in it, it's wearable with any outfit. Totally saves gray days and miserable mornings.

It was easy to make too, the buttons are connected same way with eye pins as the black button-and-chain - necklace. Most of the buttons I've purchased from an Etsy store called Craftastic, but there are some other ones in this necklace too.

Juhlapäivä // In a party

Juhlin tänään mahdollisen tulevan kälyni yhdistettyjä valmistujaisia ja synttäreitä napeilla koristautuneina. Varustukseen kuului myös nappikaulakoru mutta se saa oman postauksensa myöhemmin. Lahjaksi vein yksisarvisia ja tärkeän lainauksen.

Today I celebrated the birthday and graduation party of my sister-in-law-to-be, with button jewelry. I also has a necklace made of them, but it's gonna get a post of it's own later on. As a gift I gave a pair of unicorns and a very important quote.

Kahvitauko

Minä hukkaan aina kaikki neulat ja nuppineulat. Siis aina ja kaikki. Kun asuin vielä solussa, hukkasin myös kämppikseni nuppineulat. Ihan vain käyttämällä niitä. Maailmassani ne ovat minusta riippumattomista syistä kertakäyttötavaraa. En tiedä mihin ne menevät, mutta takaisin ne eivät kyllä ikinä tule.

Tuli tässä hiljattain mieleen, että ehkäpä se johtuu siitä, ettei minulla ole neulatyynyä. Tai periaatteessa kai on, mutta jos en tiedä sen sijaintia, ei siitä ole mitään käytännön hyötyä. Kun tänään sitten katselin jeesuskirpputorin kahvikuppirivistöjä, muistin viime syksynä Govent Gardenissa ihailemani neulakupit. Yksinkertaista ja kaunista samalla kertaa.

Pelastin siis kirppikseltä melkein rikkinäisen kahvikupin. Se oli kaunein ja selvästi yksinäinen, eikä säröisyys tässä puuhassa haittaa. Ei ollut vanua, ja koitin kerrankin tehdä jotain kokonaan kierrätetystä, joten tungin tilkusta tehdyn nyytin sisään jämäksi jäänyttä kangassilppua ja kirppiksen ompelutarvikekorista haalitun neuleentapaisen palasen. Ompelin kulmat yhteen ja muotoilin nyytin sopivaksi. Huljautin kuppiparan sisäpinnalle liimaa, asettelin tyynyn kuppiin ja ihailin sitä hetken. Sitten neulat paikalleen, ja voilá - vaikutuksesta neulojen hävikkiin pitkällä tähtäimellä ei vielä ole tarkkaa tietoa, mutta lupaavalta vaikuttaa.

Coffee Break

I always lose all my pins and needles. When I lived in a shared flat I also lost my flatmate's ones. Usually they just disappear while I'm using them. I have no idea where they go, but they never come back once they're got lost once.

Recently I've started to think this might happen cause I have no pincushion. Or theoretically I do, but cause I have no idea where it is, it doesn't help. Today, when I was watching old coffee cups at a charity shop I remembered the cup-cushions I was admiring at Govent Garden last autumn. They were simple and beautiful at the same time.

So, I rescued an almost broken teacup from the store. It was the most beautiful and obviously lonely, and the cracks doesn't matter in this DIY. I didn't have any wadding and I wanted to use only recycled materials for once, so I just put some fabric inside of that cushion made out of scrap. When I had sewn up the corners I put some glue on the inner surface of the cup and placed the cushion on it's place. Then add the needles and - that's it. I have no idea how this fill affect on the loss of needles in the long run, but the situation looks promising at the moment.

Korujen uusi koti

Kissasalkku löytyi eilen Hulluilta päiviltä, rakastuin siihen totaalisesti. Blogin kannalta relevantin laukusta tekee se, että säilöin sinne valmiit myyntiä odottelevat korut. Kätevä ja sopivan kokoinen, ja onpahan kantokahvakin valmiina, jos päätän ryhtyä kiertäväksi myyntiedustajaksi. Laukku on kyllä niin hieno, että saatan välillä lainata sitä muihinkin tarkoituksiin. Millaisen professionaalisen säväyksen se antaisikaan vaikkapa kameralaukkuna!

En tiedä oletko jo huomannut, mutta tähänkin blogiin on jokaisen tekstin loppuun ilmestynyt kolme laatikkoa, joista voit klikata parhaiten fiilistäsi vastaavan. Olisin iloinen, jos tekisit sen edes silloin tällöin. Yritän vähän ottaa selvää mistä jengi tykkää. Kiitos <3

The New Home of the Jewelry

I found this briefcase yesterday and totally fell in love. And yes, it's relevant to post about it in this blog cause I moved all my jewelry waiting to be sold into it. It's the perfect size, shape and color. It even has a handle, so if I ever get down to be a travelling sales agent, I have the equipment ready. But I might use this for other purposes as well, think how professional it would look for example as a camera case!

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but this blog has now too three little boxes after every post. If you could even once a while click the one that's closest of your feelings, I would be very grateful. Just try to find out a bit of what people likes. Thank you <3

Nappikauppaa

Tai oikeastaan nappilahjontaa. Sain nämä kymmenen mustaa nappia lahjaksi ystävältä, jonka villatakkiin ne ennen kuuluivat. Kun villatakki muuttui käyttökelvottomaksi, minä sain napit. Oma nappikokoelmani ei olisikaan mahdollistanut näin tasalaatuista kaulakorua, minulla kun on samanlaisia nappeja korkeintaan kaksin kappalein.

Napit yhdistin toisiinsa väännetyillä korupiikeillä, käytössä hyväksi havaittu keino. Koska niitä ei ollut kaulan ympäri asti, jatkoin ketjulla. Koska ketju oli kevyttä, ohutta ja lyhyinä pätkinä, päädyin laittamaan kunnon kerroksen.

I Love Buttons

My friend's cardigan become unusable, so she gave me the buttons: ten big black ones. My own button collection wouldn't have made it possible to make a necklace like this, cause I only have two of the same button in maximum. Usually only one of each.

I connected the buttons with twisted eye pins, it's stood the test of time. Cause there weren't enough buttons to make it around one's neck I added some chains. The chains were light, thin and short, so I put plenty of them.

Parisuhdekorvikset

Lehmät hankin samaan aikaan kuin karhuntaikorvisten karhutkin. Kaikki löytyivät paikallisesta Tiimarista, joka on alkanut myydä pikkuruisia muovieläimiä laatikosta kassakoneen vierestä. Euro kappaleelta on kyllä kiskurihinta, mutta oli pakko ostaa muutamaan korvispariin, kun olivat niin söpöjä ja hyvän kokoisia.

Luulin tosiaan hankkivani kaksi lehmää, mutta huomasin vasta kotona, että toinen onkin sonni. Ihmettelin vähän aikaa erilaista pään muotoa tai jotain sellaista ennen kuin tajusin kääntää elukat ympäri. Joo, onhan se aika selvä juttu, jos vain toisella on utareet. Kahden biologin tytär kuittaa. Syytän kiirettä, kyllä minä yleensä sonnin ja lehmän toisistaan erotan.

Tästä tuli kyllä suloinen pariskunta roikkumaan jonkun korviin. Ei se haittaa, etteivät ole samanlaiset, kun ovat kuitenkin selvästi luodut toisilleen. Itse asiassa olen sitä mieltä, että korviksista tuli heti astetta hauskemmat, kuin jos ne olisivat vain olleet kaksi samanlaista lehmää. Mikä mahtava erehdys.

Relationship Earrings

I bought the cows at the same time than the bears for the bear day -earrings. They are all from Tiimari, a Finnish chain of stores that sells toys, craft supplies and almost everything small. In our local store they have started to sell these teeny plastic animals and I had to buy a few even though I think 1€ per piece is way too much. But they were like made for earrings, small and light enough.

I thought I bought two cows, but later on at home I realized the other one was a bull. I was wondering the different shapes of their heads or something like that before I turned them over. Yeah, the case is kinda clear if only on of them has udders. A daughter of two biologists says hello. I blame the hurry, usually I can tell a cow and a bull from another.

But in the end, this made a cute couple to dangle from someone's ears. It doesn't matter they're not similar, as they are clearly a match made in heaven. I actually think it's even more fun this way, than if there had been two cows. What a lovely mistake.
