Camp Indie - verkkokurssi on vihdoin alkanut, ja ensimmäisenä projektina oli vanhasta kirjasta tehty muistikirja. Innostuin ideasta kovasti, vaikka lopulta toteutinkin omani hieman versioituna.

Camp Indie - online class has finally started, and the project #1 was a notebook made of an old book. I got so excited about the idea, but eventually made mine in a little different way.

Valitsin kansiksi vanhan kasvikirjan, jonka ostin joskus kirpputorilta. Kirjan sivuille olen nimittäin keksinyt käyttötarkoituksen jo aiemmin, ja olin iloinen, kun kannetkaan eivät nyt menneet hukkaan. Muistikirjan sivut päädyin tekemään postikorteista. Minä nimittäin pidän niistä, ja jotenkin niitä aina kertyy kasoiksi asti. Osa on ilmaiskortteja, osa ostettuja. Sujautin joukkoon myös muutaman postin tuoman valmiiksi kirjoitetun, koska pidin niiden kuvista. Ajatus satunnaisista viesteistä siellä täällä saa minut hymyilemään.

I chose an old botany book as covers. I've bought it from a flea market and already know what to do with the pages. This way the covers didn't end up as trash, and that made me happy. I decided to make the pages of post cards. I like them a lot, and that's why I have many of them in my drawer. Some of them are free ads, some of them I've bought. I also used some already written cards sent to me just cause I loved the pictures. And the idea of a random note from a friend along my notebook pages makes me smile.

Koska emme omista rei'ittäjää, tein korttipinoon ja selkämykseen reiät poralla. Tämä tarkoitti käytännössä sitä, että kortit oli pujotettava neulan avulla nauhaan yksitellen. Ei niitä onneksi niin paljoa ollut, että olisi alkanut ketuttaa. Kun kaikki kortit olivat nauhassa, pujotin nauhan päät rei'istä selkämyksen ulkosyrjälle ja sidoin umpparin kautta rusetille.

We don't have a hole buncher, so I made the holes to the cards and the covers with my drill. That meant I had to thread each card, one at a time, with a needle onto the ribbons. Luckily there weren't that many cards this would have pissed me off. When all the cards were in the ribbon, I put ribbons through the holes of the back and tied knots, then bows, on the outer side.

Mietin pitkään, miten asettelisin kortit. Jos olisin pinonnut ne normaalisti pinoon, olisi kirjoitustilaa tullut vain vasemman sivun puolelle. Kirjoitan kuitenkin paljon mieluummin oikealle. Jos taas olisin pinonnut kortit niin, että takapuolet olisivat oikean käden puolella, olisin kirjan avatessani nähnyt vain tylsiä kirjoitussivuja enkä yhtään kuvaa. Lopulta päädyin asettelemaan kortit niin, että kuva- ja tekstisivut osuvat vastakkain. Siis niin, että joka toinen aukeama on pelkkiä kuvia, joka toinen pelkkiä taustoja. Tähän ratkaisuun olen tyytyväinen.

I spent a lot of time thinking how to pile the cards. If I had made a normal pile with pictures on top, all the writing space on the back of the cards would have been on the left hand's side. I rather write on the right side, but if I've turned the pile other way round, I would have seen only the ugly backsides when opening the book, no pictures anywhere. Eventually I ended up arranging the cards so that there were pictures and backsides against each other. That is to say I now have every other spread pictures and every other writing space. I have to say I'm happy with that.

I love this notebook.

Now I just have to grab a pen and start filling it.
